Company from Dortmund refits windows with NFC chips

In July 2023, Siekmann Econosto, a company from Germany, refitted windows with an NFC tag and the DBS WinDo Flow solution. The building is a pilot project of our system provider VEKA. In 2015, the "Technology & Innovation" department of the VEKA Group took over the support of the pilot project.

Fully automatic windows with chip

In 2014, the building was completely equipped with fully automatic VEKA windows, all of which are controlled via a building control system. All rooms in the building have several sensors. Temperature as well as CO2 values and humidity are measured. A ventilation or air conditioning system was intentionally not included. With the help of the measured sensor data, experience is being gathered on the extent to which windows influence the indoor climate.

The aim is to create a permanently pleasant and natural building climate, which is achieved exclusively through intelligent control of the windows. In practice, for example, the windows are opened and closed by a motor when the CO2 concentration is too high, for night-time cooling or for ventilation before work begins. To implement these scenarios, the smart solutions of the TEXINO brand have been installed.

Since the management of the property includes not only the evaluation of the sensor data, but also all repair, optimisation and maintenance work, a digital solution for simple documentation and management of the windows was sought. Thanks to the personal contact with the colleagues at DBS, the WinDo Flow solution and the corresponding NFC chip could be refitted.

Simple management and documentation

The building has around 150 windows. Keeping track of each window and when it was installed, replaced or maintained, is almost impossible without time-consuming paperwork.

To simplify the management of the windows and, above all, the regular maintenance work, a first part of the windows in the building have now been equipped with a small NFC chip. To do this, the chip is simply glued into the window frame afterwards. The chip and window are then married with the help of the InstallationPro app, so that all information can be stored digitally. All measures, maintenance and repair work can now be digitally documented. This means that the entire history of each window is easily recognisable and can be viewed at any time.

"Even if the NFC chip was not integrated when the window was installed initially, the solution can also be used afterwards. This also results in advantages for existing buildings. Thanks to the NFC tag, we now have all the information digitally available in the app. That is convenient and reliable," says Philipp Kalverkamp, Head of Development for Technology & Innovation at the VEKA Group.

NFC tag in a window

The refitted NFC tag is not visible when the window is closed or tilted. However, all information can be accessed digitally at any time via a short scan with a smartphone or tablet.
